Pinot Noir is the name of the game at Etude, a Carneros winery that straddles the divide between Napa and Sonoma. Known for producing high caliber Pinot Noirs, you can examine these exquisite reds on The Study of Pinot tasting, which highlights their Grace Benoist Ranch varietals. Each of these wines is grown in an individual, eight-acre plot of the vineyard and expresses unique characteristics. Tingle your taste buds with some bubbly from Domaine Carneros. The sight of the stunning French château, surrounded by endless vineyards, might make you feel as if you’ve been whisked away to Europe. Presented by The Culinary Institute of America, the CIA at Copia is a place for visitors (and food and wine lovers) to gather and participate in a variety of programs and experiences, from hands-on cooking and baking classes, to wine-tasting classes and sustainability in food discussions. When you’re done learning, definitely stay to have a bite to eat. The Grove at CIA Copia is where culinary up-and-comers showcase their skills in the massive, open kitchen. The menu is seasonal and ever-changing, but focuses on Mediterranean-inspired dishes using Napa Valley ingredients.

Morimoto Napa

Itching to balance out all that Napa Valley wine with some different spirits? Head to Morimoto, where you can enjoy a large selection of sake and Japanese whiskey. Contemporary while still paying tribute to tradition, the menu is a happy balance of top-notch sushi options, as well as more non-traditional Japanese fare. Dining omakase (chef’s choice) when at a sushi restaurant, especially at one with such a reputable chef, is always fantastic. For the a la carte eaters, you’ll have to make the tough choice yourself of which beautiful dish to order, since, at Morimoto Napa, you eat with your eyes first.

La Toque

Consistently one of the top-rated restaurants in downtown Napa, and in all of Napa Valley for that matter, Chef Ken Frank’s La Toque has earned a Michelin Star nearly every year they have been awarded in Wine Country. La Toque takes care to have something for everyone, with three different dinner menus offered nightly. There’s the À La Carte Experience for those who want to sample just a few things, the luxe six-course Chef’s Table Tasting Menu, an experience not-to-be-missed, as well as the Vegetable Tasting Menu—an entire menu dedicated to those who want a delectable dining experience featuring only vegetables, much of which is regionally sourced.

Oxbow Public Market

Of course, dining in Napa Valley isn’t always about fancy restaurants or prix fixe meals… hence why Oxbow Public Market is so popular: it offers a smorgasbord of delicious casual dining options. Located in downtown Napa, Oxbow Public Market offers a vibrant and eclectic mix of local food vendors, artisan cafes, and specialty shops, all within a laid-back, marketplace atmosphere. All aboard The Napa Valley Wine Train! One of the most unique and enchanting experiences in Napa Valley, the wine train offers guests a trip to the past while showing you the best of what Napa Valley has to offer today.

On your 36-mile round trip from Napa to St. Helena and back, you’ll experience gourmet cuisine, stunning views, and stops at wineries. With its refurbished, vintage pull cars, luxurious detailing, and romantic ambiance, the Napa Valley Wine Train offers a nostalgic journey through the golden age of locomotive travel. Here is everything you need to know about this one-of-a-kind experience.

The train is also a gourmet restaurant

Though the thrill of the ride is a huge part of the experience, the train is primarily a rolling gourmet restaurant featuring a changing seasonal menu that highlights fresh, local ingredients (all prepared in the train’s two onboard kitchens). From ricotta gnocchi to roasted beef tenderloin, expect to dine on decadent courses of gourmet, Napa-style fare. In the spirit of Wine Country, an extensive onboard wine list is available for lunch and dinner, offering many different regional wines. You can even bring your own wine aboard, but just know you’ll have to pay a corkage fee.

Yes, the wine train makes stops at famous wineries

First-time visitors are encouraged to try The Legacy Experience, which includes a multi-course gourmet lunch during an hour-and-a-half-long journey to two of Napa Valley’s most famous wineries, Charles Krug Winery and V. Sattui.

The full-day Legacy Experience makes its first stop at the historic Charles Krug Winery, the oldest winery in Napa Valley. Guests will enjoy a private tour and tasting at the winery, which is the birthplace of California wine tasting as we know it (Charles Krug opened the first tasting room in the state), before heading to the whimsical winery that is V. Sattui. One of the first wineries to offer a wine tasting experience, you’ll enjoy their award-winning small batch wines amongst the Italianate architecture and lush gardens.

The Napa Valley Wine Train also offers half day tours, such as the Grgich Hills Winery Tour, which includes a two-hour train ride with a gourmet, multi-course lunch, followed by a tour and tasting at Grgich Hills Estate, founded by wine legend, Mike Grgich, who is recognized as one of the greatest winemakers in the world.

Children are welcome on the Napa Valley Wine Train

No need to leave the kids behind, as the Napa Valley Wine Train is an adventure fit for the whole family. The Open Air Car is perfect for a kid-friendly lunch since it is the most casual car on the train, so you can relax with your family without worrying about interrupting guests who seek a more upscale experience. The car’s open-air windows provide an eye-catching panoramic view of the passing scenery as the train glides through the valley. A trip on the Napa Valley Wine Train is like stepping back in time

Everyone knows California’s Napa Valley has some of the best wineries in the world, but it’s so much more than just wine. Napa Valley is a world-class Wine Country filled with extraordinary culinary experiences, stunning mountains and vineyards, and amazing art. It’s also just a hop, skip, and a jump (or rather a short drive) from San Francisco and neighboring Sonoma, which makes it a perfect destination for a day trip.

While you could easily fit in a half-day visit to Napa, we suggest making it a full-day trip, so you can do all the fun things like wine tasting, dining out, and exploring, of course. And there’s no need for lots of planning because this itinerary maps out how to have a fantastic day full of some of Napa Valley’s best experiences without too much time in the car. (Note: Most of the stops on the itinerary are in and around the city of Napa, as destinations further north like Rutherford and St. Helena would eat up too much drive time.)

Start with a hearty breakfast

Breakfast is definitely the most important meal of the day when wine tasting is on the itinerary. Proteins and carbs will help soak up that booze (or at least help it absorb it more slowly), and there’s no better protein and carb combo than the chicken and waffles at Boon Fly Café at the picturesque Carneros Resort and Spa. Located at 4048 Sonoma Highway (as you head into Napa from San Francisco or Sonoma), it’s the perfect spot to start the day. Pro tip: Grab a dozen of the famous donuts for car snacking.

Venture into the vines (or explore art) at Hess Collection Winery

Atop Mount Veeder, you’ll find Hess Persson Estates, located at 4441 Redwood Road in Napa, where you can see the vineyards up close and personal by way of an all-terrain vehicle. That’s right, you’ll venture into the 1,000-acre mountainside vineyard property via a luxury ATV, stopping along the way to taste current releases and take in breathtaking views, then finishing with a seated wine and food pairing. Or, if you’d rather enjoy your wine with a side of art, opt for the Walking Tour of the Hess Contemporary Art Museum, one of the most impressive private collections in the world, before sitting down to sample the winery’s newest releases.

Enjoy a delicious lunch at Oxbow Market (plus treats to take home)

Oxbow Public Market, located at 610 1st Street in Napa, is popular with locals and tourists alike, and for good reason. You’ll find all kinds of food purveyors at this lively high-end market, where you can enjoy a fantastic meal as well as find all kinds of epicurean delights from local Californian food and wine producers. Take a lap before committing to your lunch fare (you’ll find everything from oysters to burgers to tacos) and then enjoy your meal on the spacious deck overlooking the Napa River. You can also find plenty of goodies to assemble your own picnic, if you’d prefer to pack a picnic and eat along the Napa Riverfront.

Stroll and shop in downtown Napa

If you’re looking for something to do other than wine tasting, look no further than First Street in downtown Napa, where you’ll find three blocks of tasting rooms, interesting shops, and unique art galleries. You can also stop by the Napa Valley Welcome Center, located at 1300 1st Street, and pick up a complimentary map for the Napa Valley Art Walk, a public outdoor art exhibition featuring eight sculptures, all within walking distance of each other.

Tour and taste at some of Napa’s best wineries

It would be extremely ambitious to stop at every winery mentioned on this itinerary, but if you want to make a go of it, they’re listed here in driving order. Better yet, pick one or two, so you can really enjoy the experience without rushing or worrying about time.

Stags’ Leap Winery, located at 6150 Silverado Trail in Napa, is on one of California’s first wine estates—home to 240 acres of vineyards and an 1890s stone Manor House surrounded by beautiful gardens. Book the 90-minute Manor House Tour & Tasting experience so you can explore the property and gardens before enjoying a seated tasting.

Silverado Vineyards, at 6121 Silverado Trail in the heart of the Stags Leap District, is all about offering up quality wines alongside beautiful views. Try their new White Wine & Caviar experience for something on the lighter side, or dive into their rich Cabernets during their Legacy Cabernet offering.

If you’re planning to head back to San Francisco or Sonoma before dinner, stop into Domaine Carneros on your way out of town, which is located at 1240 Duhig Road in Napa. Stroll through the formal gardens before taking a seat on the terrace of the French-inspired Chateau, where you can sip bubbles, snack on caviar, and toast to an amazing day in Wine Country.

If an urban winery is more your jam, don’t miss Robert Mondavi’s new Arch & Tower tasting room. Located overlooking the Napa River, at 930 3rd Street in Napa, Arch & Tower is downtown Napa’s newest spot to sip acclaimed wine while enjoying curated food pairings. If you plan it right, you can sip a glass of wine as the sun sets during their Golden Hour tasting, before heading out to dinner.

Get a new perspective on Napa with an unusual or global-inspired dining experience

If you’re “just” looking for exceptional food in a stylish space that stays fixed to the ground for the entire meal, Napa has some extraordinary restaurants. Angèle Restaurant & Bar, a riverfront bistro located at 540 Main Street in downtown Napa, will transport you to France for the evening. And dining at Morimoto Napa, located just a few doors down at 610 Main Street, feels like a trip to Japan, complete with sushi, sake, and even a little shopping.

We also adore the food at The Grove at the CIA, located at 500 1st Street in Napa. Here, shareable, Mediterranean-inspired dishes are chock full of ingredients from Copia’s own on-site gardens.

However, if you’re looking for a more unusual dining experience, you can go on a literal culinary journey via land or sea. Roll past Napa’s lush landscapes and travel back in time on the Napa Valley Wine Train, located at 1275 Mckinstry Street in Napa. This classic Napa experience is available for wine tours during the day, but they also offer a multi-course dinner at night. If that doesn’t float your boat, a Winemaker Cruise definitely will. Glide along the Napa River in a 50-foot yacht while enjoying a four-course dinner with wine pairings. The boat departs from the Napa Yacht Club, located at 100 Riverside Road in Napa.

Napa Valley boasts plenty of beautiful spots to call home during a visit, but if you’re looking for a wide variety of things to do and see all in one convenient location, downtown Napa is the place to be. This once sleepy town at the south end of Napa Valley has undergone a major renaissance over the past decade and is now home to luxury lodging, hip wine bars, celebrity-led restaurants, wine tasting rooms, and beautiful river walks. So park the car, forget about traffic, and take advantage of the urban oasis that is downtown Napa. Here’s your guide to making the most of a visit.

Eat Well

From award-winning fine dining to farm-to-table casual eateries, downtown Napa is a foodie haven. Simply put, you’ll want to make room in your bellies to chow down on all the delicious offerings that Napa has to offer. First on the agenda should be a visit to the lively Oxbow Public Market. A gathering place for gourmet grub in Napa, Oxbow is where you can find everything from oysters and tacos to chocolates and cupcakes. In fact, there are over 20 merchants under one roof, providing endless ways to eat and drink yourself silly!

For more delectable fare, follow your nose to Bounty Hunter Wine Bar & Smokin’ BBQ. In addition to pulled pork and beer can chicken featuring house-made rubs, Bounty Hunter has 40 wines available by the glass. Down the street is famed Napa Valley restaurant, Angèle, renowned for its upscale French country cuisine and quaint, romantic atmosphere since 2002. While wine is a natural choice as you dine on French fare, when your palate needs a break from the grape juice, you can’t go wrong with one of Angèle’s fantastic cocktails.

If you still need more ideas, check out Scala Osteria, a seafood-centric Italian joint from the founder of Bistro Don Giovani, or Morimoto, the sleek Napa River restaurant from celebrity chef Masaharu Morimoto, where an extensive menu of sushi, seafood, Wagyu beef, sake, and Japanese Whiskey can be found.

Sip & Savor

Housed in a former saloon and brothel from the late 1800s, the Vintner’s Collective is a good place to sample a wide variety of Napa Valley wines from one location. Here, you’ll find over two dozen quality boutique producers who are too small to have their own tasting rooms, with various tasting spaces from which to enjoy their coveted wines.

Make a point to stop into Acumen Wine Gallery, featuring a small but high quality collection of organically grown estate wines from Atlas Peak; Lithology, The Lounge, the sophisticated downtown outpost of the highly acclaimed Lithology brand; and WALT Wines, where tasters can sip their way through 1,000 miles of Pinot Noir from within the bright, cheerful space. Another noteworthy (and new!) spot to check out is Arch & Tower. This beautiful tasting room is the downtown outpost of Robert Mondavi, offering wine tastings and food pairings overlooking the Napa River.

Compline is a wine bar, restaurant, and bottle shop in one, and a worthy destination in downtown Napa. Founded by two sommeliers, Compline’s wine collection is complete with bottlings from around the world, including some obscure varietals from lesser known regions. Stop in for a glass and a bite, and be sure to check their calendar for educational tastings and events. Around the corner, Cadet Beer & Wine Bar is a popular spot for wine, beer, and tasty provisions. Here, you’ll find a worldly selection of wine, from rare Champagne to Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, bottled beers, and an old school vinyl collection, plus there’s always a fun lineup of regular events and guest wineries worth checking out.

See A Show

During the summer months, head to downtown Napa’s Oxbow River Stage at Oxbow Commons Park for the summer concert series. Live music with a backdrop of the Napa River? What could be better! Just note that no outside food and beverages are allowed—luckily, you’ll find beer, wine, spirits, and culinary offerings available for purchase.

At the eclectic JaM Cellars, wine tastings take place in the casual setting of their music and wine lounge. In addition to JaM’s classic vinyl collection and Rolling Stone Magazine-clad walls, the tasting room also plays host to weekly live music sets known as JaMSessions. Another fantastic place to catch a show is the historic Uptown Theatre. This renovated art-deco theater from 1937 regularly welcomes musical performers and comedy acts. The intimate setting means there’s never a bad seat in the house.

Other Things to Do

Foodies and wannabe chefs won’t want to miss heading to the CIA at Copia, the ultimate destination for wine, art, and food-related happenings and exhibits. Take a cooking class in the state-of-the-art teaching kitchen, explore the collection of specialty cookware at the Chuck Williams Culinary Arts Museum, or try their new cocktail bar, The Haven, where housemade bites and curated cocktails are sure to hit the spot.

Stationed in downtown Napa, the historic Napa Valley Wine Train provides a stylish way to tour around Napa Valley, where plush rail cars, elegant décor, and gourmet cuisine offer a glimpse of the glamourous days of train travel. Whether you stay on the train and enjoy the ride or opt for one of the half or full day tours with wine excursions, the Wine Train is a unique way to take in the beautiful scenery of Napa Valley.

For shopping, head to First Street Napa, the heart of shopping in downtown Napa, where you’ll find a variety of boutiques offering the best in fashion, home décor, art, and gifts. If shopping until you drop isn’t in your budget, a more affordable Napa activity is bike riding around the area. Rent bikes for a scenic ride along the paved Napa Valley Vine Trail, which runs 12.5 miles from Napa to Yountville. Or, rent kayaks or paddle boards from Napa Valley Paddle for a fun outdoor experience on the water. They offer guided and unguided rentals by the hour, day, or weekend. Another great activity that won’t break the bank is simply walking around downtown Napa to experience the Napa Art Walk, an urban exhibition of public artworks. The sculptures change every couple of years, highlighting the work of various artists from throughout California and the West Coast.

The Napa Valley Wine Auction is a legendary event that raises millions of dollars and has everyone raising glasses for a good cause: proceeds support Napa Valley’s youth mental health programs. While Blue Note is taking a hiatus in 2024 (it will be back in 2025), the Festival’s Black Radio Experience is an excellent alternative. Celebrating the rich tapestry of Black culture and the power of music to transcend boundaries, this fun event—to be held at the Meritage Resort and Spa—is sure to bring all the great music, food, and vibes.

Napa Porch Fest

Napa Porch Fest is a wonderful event dedicated to Napa Valley musicians playing on—you guessed it—front porches in the historic Fuller Park neighborhood of downtown Napa. Festival Napa Valley is a spectacular 10-day extravaganza of musical arts, held across various locations in Napa Valley. Dozens of wineries participate through vintner’s luncheons and patron dinners, so you know there will be plenty of good food and drink to fuel your experiences. While tickets for the special patron events come with a premium price tag, the proceeds are put to good use, supporting youth arts programs, free community concerts, and scholarships. Napa Town & Country Fair

Napa’s own miniature version of Sundance is the Napa Film Festival, which takes place over five days in November and showcases over 100 films. You don’t have to visit Italy to experience truffles at their finest. Napa’s own claim to fungi fame is the Perigord black truffle, and the annual Napa Valley Truffle Festival is dedicated to them. From hunting down these delicacies with truffle-sniffing dogs to the Truffle and Wine Dinner and seminars on growing them yourself, there’s no shortage of gourmand inspiration. And, of course there are plenty of opportunities to pair truffle-covered bites with delicious Napa wines. Throughout the weekend, happenings and tastings are held at the Festival Marketplace in Oxbow Public Market, where you can purchase your very own local truffles. Yum!

Napa Valley Marathon

Why not balance your wine tastings and food explorations by running the Napa Valley Marathon? Known for its breathtaking route along the Silverado Trail, this marathon is often hailed as one of the most scenic in the United States. As you traverse the course, you’ll be treated to views of some of California’s most renowned wineries, with picturesque vineyards and idyllic countryside vistas surrounding you. Exciting events are held on the weekend of the marathon as well, including the annual Pasta Dinner at the Meritage Resort. Whether you decide on the 5K or the full 26.2 miles, reward yourself with a well deserved glass of Cabernet Sauvignon and a soak in Calistoga’s hot springs.

Calistoga to Napa

One might think that it would be easy to taste wine in Napa Valley at almost all hours of the day, but while there are lots of bars and restaurants that offer excellent wines by the glass and bottle, “last call” for tours and wine tastings at most Napa wineries is well before the sun sets over the vineyards.

Still, if you’re not much of a daytime drinker or are looking to keep tasting Napa Valley wines into the late afternoon/early evening, there are a few excellent wineries and tasting rooms where you can snag a reservation (or even walk in) until at least 5:30 p.m., including one that’s open until midnight.

PEJU Winery

If you want to taste most of this small family-owned winery’s estate-grown wines, including the popular Cabernet Franc, you have to either join their wine club or visit the winery’s tasting room. The latter sits inside one of the more recognizable buildings in Napa Valley, a copper-roofed, stone-faced building with a 50-foot tower at the end of a Sycamore tree-lined driveway and surrounded by gorgeous gardens with meandering walkways and outdoor sculptures. (Be sure to make time for a self-guided tour.) At PEJU, reservations are recommended for all wine tastings and pairings, which are seated, with the last one offered at 5 p.m.

Arch & Tower

Part of the larger Robert Mondavi Estate, Arch & Tower is the legendary wine label’s newest addition (and the only place to taste from the Mondavi portfolio while the iconic winery undergoes renovations this year and next). Located in the center of downtown Napa, Arch & Tower serves as a spot for unique events and experiences with beautiful views overlooking the river. Tastings include the Napa Exploration, The Taste of To Kalon, and The Legend Lunch, all paired with a select menu of everything from small bites to three course meals, depending on which option you choose. Arch & Tower is open daily, although their schedule does vary seasonally. Hours are from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm and tastings are only available by appointment until 4:00 pm. Some tastings, like The Taste of To Kalon, can only be reserved until 2:45.

Lithology, The Lounge

Alejandro Bulgheroni, the mastermind behind Lithology, has brought together an all-star team to craft small-lot wines from esteemed vineyards throughout Oakville, Rutherford, and St. Helena. Here, you can get a taste of the winery’s precision and care, with the last tasting starting at 4:30 pm (the tasting room is open until 6 pm).

Domaine Carneros

There is nothing quite like sitting on the terrace of the Château at Domaine Carneros while sipping sparkling wine and looking out at the vine-covered vineyard hills of Napa Valley’s Carneros AVA. Alpha Omega Collective

Three very different wineries collide to form the Alpha Omega Collective in downtown Napa. Vintners Robin and Michelle Baggett pride themselves on producing the best varietals from across the world—including Burgundian wines at SLO’s Tolosa, Bordeaux-inspired wines at Napa’s Alpha Omega, and Mediterranean reds from Perinet in Spain’s Priorat. Select from three different tasting options, including their Signature Flight ($50), Curated Flight ($75), and Flagship Flight ($100). Not interested in a full tasting? They also offer wine by the bottle and glass. Should you start to get a bit snacky (don’t we all during a wine tasting?), Alpha Omega Collective encourages sippers to order from The Dutch Door, their next door neighbors who focus on sustainably made and locally sourced American classics. Louis M. Martini

This historic St. Helena winery is best known for being one of the first wineries to open in Napa Valley after Prohibition and has built a reputation around its world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. The renovated historic winery has large glass walls that let in tons of natural light from outside, as well as one behind the Crown Bar in the main tasting room that offers wine tasters a view into the expansive oak barrel room. Louis M. Martini offers food pairings, an underground cellar experience, and cabana tastings, but that aforementioned bar is where guests who want to taste wine in the late afternoon will be. The winery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week, and reservations are required with the last one at 4 p.m.

Priest Ranch Winery

Priest Ranch Winery is known for adventurous yet approachable wine made with minimal intervention.
